TICKS (ACARI: IXODIDAE) IN KARELIA

The main dataset comprises the results of years of research on the distribution of ixodid ticks in Karelia. Information is presented about the findings of Ixodes persulcatus and I. ricinus – the main vectors of dangerous tick-borne diseases, in Russian Karelia and adjacent Finnish territories (Provinces of North Karelia and Kainuu). Sampling of questing ticks was done by flagging from vegetation in the period from 2007 to 2018. Each line in the table represents an individual transect, for which time of sampling, coordinates, presence/absence of ticks is specified. If both tick species were encountered on the same transect, info is provided in two lines, one for each species. Details on the number of ticks collected, number of flag-km covered, and the results of sampling from domestic animals and humans will be added later. This dataset is a constituent part of the database “Ixodid ticks of Karelia”, registered on April 8, 2010, # 2010620234 (proprietor IB KarRC RAS), and has been previously used to prepare articles on the distribution and abundances of ticks in Karelia and adjacent Finnish territories (Bugmyrin et al., 2011; 2013; 2014; 2016; 2019).

The objective of the project is to increase the knowledge about problems, prevention and eradication methods of invasive alien species to the people, organizations and government officials on the both sides of the border (Republic of Karelia & Finland). This will be achieved by creating knowledge exchange mechanisms, Best Practices, and establishing and connecting ict-infrastructures to be used for data and knowledge exchange. In this project we will focus on most acute issues on terrestrial and aquatic invasive species, animal spread diseases (zoonosis), agricultural and forestry pests. By building the infrastructure on internationally recognized open data network like GBIF and accepted standards, we can guarantee long term-sustainability, interoperability and support for the technical solutions created in this project.

Описание плана выполнения исследований The main project outputs: 1) Establishing a data-sharing infrastructure and IAS (Invasive Alien Species) portal at Karelian Research Centre, and enabling the Finnish (vieraslajit.fi) and Karelian portals to read each other’s data. Disseminating results to recruit new data providers. 2) Establishing an expert network to produce and share knowledge on prevention and eradication methods of IAS, developing best practices, and widely disseminating the information. 3) Testing, using and developing eradication methods to combat chosen species with collaborative effort.

Adult questing ticks were collected by flagging (0.7 m × 1.1 m) from vegetation.

Охват исследования The dataset includes tick registrations in South and Central Karelia (2007-2018), in Finland (Provinces of North Karelia and Kainuu, 2008-2009) and Arkhangelsk Region (2007-06-11). Overall, 945 transects were sampled.

Описание этапа методики:

  1. 1. The coordinates of the tick survey transects’ beginning and end were recorded using GPS navigator. 2. Adults and nymphs of ticks were collected by flagging (a 0.7×1.1 m square piece of white honeycomb cotton cloth). 3. The ticks were kept in moist bandage wrapped in foil or plastic bags and stored at +4°C until identification (Kislenko and Korotkov, 1989). 4. The transect and the number of ticks collected (males, females, and nymphs) were documented in a log. 5. Counts were standardized as the total number of ticks per flag-kilometer (flag-km). 6. Taxonomic identification of live ticks and tick specimens stored in 70% ethanol was done under a binocular microscope (16×) following the recommendations of Dr. Filippova (1977) 7. Ticks were used in the following studies (morphology, genetics, infections, experiments, laboratory colonies, etc.); some ticks were stored in 70% ethanol. 8. All information is integrated into MS Access.
